How we make our special toffee
Why do we call it Special Toffee?
We’ve been making our Special Toffee for a long time and we think it’s pretty special! Made with a secret recipe, that took quite a few attempts to perfect… it’s been synonymous with Thorntons for many years and that’s why we call it our Original Special Toffee!
When did we first make Special Toffee?
Before the emergence of our Special Toffee, Thorntons sold other toffee. However, Stanley and Norman believed they could create an even better toffee… and that’s just what they did! Our beloved Original Special Toffee was first made almost 100 years ago in 1925, with the recipe created by Stanley Thornton.
How many recipes?
It took Stanley 50 attempts to get the recipe perfected so that our Special Toffee had the ideal taste and texture and we remain faithful to that recipe today - after all, why change something that took so many tries to get just right!
How do we make our Special Toffee?
We make our Special Toffee recipe with more traditional methods, using only the finest ingredients to ensure its delicious buttery flavour and chewy texture. Timing is everything when it comes to our Special Toffee and it’s made in batches which is allowed to cool for 24 hours, and this is when the flavour intensifies to give its distinct flavour.
